Ginger – 2 tsp chopped

Garlic – 2 tsp chopped

Green chillies – 2 sliced

Curry leaves – 2 sprigs

Tomatoes – 2 chopped

Onion – 1 big, chopped

Kashmiri chilly powder – 3 tsp

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Garam masala – 1/2 tsp

Water – 1 cup

Vinegar – 1 tsp

Salt – to taste

For Tempering

Coconut oil – 1 tbsp

Cloves – 2

Cinnamon – 1″ piece

Cardamom – 1

Aniseeds – 1/8 tsp

Star anise – 1/2

Dry red chillies – 3 broken

Curry leaves – 1 sprig

Small onions – 6 sliced

Put chicken and all the mentioned ingredients into a ‘manchatti’ or a stew pot and cook on a low flame till the chicken is done and oil starts to float on top.  Heat oil in a small pan and add the whole spices, curry leaves and small onions.  Fry till the onions turn golden brown.  Pour it over the chicken curry.  Tasty ‘Chicken Mulakittathu’ goes well with steamed rice, puttu, idiyappam and dosa.  Cheers!
