Chemmeen Irumban Puli Curry / Prawn and Bilimbi Curry



Prawns – 500gm cleaned

Irumban puli / Bilimbi /Chemmeen puli – 10 sliced

Onion – 1 sliced

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Chilly powder – 3 tsp

Water – 2 cups

Salt – to taste


For Grinding

Grated coconut – 1 cup

Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp

Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp

For Seasoning

Coconut oil – 2 tbsp

Small onions – 8 chopped

Garlic – 4 small, chopped

Curry leaves – 3 sprigs

Dry red chillies – 4 broken, seeds removed



Cook the prawns along with the mentioned ingredients till the bilimbi is soft and tender.  Add some water to the grated coconut, cumin seeds and turmeric powder.  Grind them to a fine paste.  Add this paste to the cooked prawns.  Add more water if the curry is thick.  Simmer for 5 minutes.  Heat oil in a small pan and splutter mustard seeds.  Add small onions and garlic and fry for a minute.  Then add the curry leaves and red chillies.  Fry till the onions turn golden brown in color.  Pour this over the curry.  Lip-smacking ‘Chemmeen Irumban Puli Curry / Prawn and Bilimbi Curry’ goes well with rice, chapathi, appam, idiyappam, dosa and idlis.  Enjoy!
