Keerai Parippu Koottu/ Palak Dal/ Spinach Dal

Ingredients

Palak keerai/ Spinach – 2 bunches

Toor dal – 3/4 cup

Onion – 1 +1 sliced

Garlic – 1 tbsp chopped

Green chillies – 4 slit

Turmeric powder – 1 tsp

Water – 2 cups

Salt  – to taste

Curry leaves – 1 sprig

Tomatoes – 2 medium chopped

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Oil – 1 tbsp

Method

Wash and soak the dal in water for 15 minutes.  Clean, wash and chop the palak.  Drain and put the dal into a pressure cooker.  Add onions, garlic, green chillies and turmeric powder.  Pour 2 cups of water over it.  Also add the chopped palak.  Close the lid and cook for 10 minutes on a low flame after the first whistle.  Let it cool.  Heat oil in a non-stick pan and splutter mustard seeds.  Add onions and curry leaves.  Saute till the onions turn light brown.  Add tomatoes and saute till the oil separates.  Slightly mash the cooked palak-dal mixture and pour it into the pan.  Add salt and mix well.  Allow the dal to simmer for about 5 minutes.  Serve yummy ‘Keerai Parippu Koottu/ Palak Dal’ with rice, chapathis or wheat dosas.  Cheers!

  • I love palak dal something which i had for the first time when we went to eat N.Indian food when i was younger. Mom never made them she always made plain dal which ilove too. This looks so so good.

  • Everytime I visit your blog I wish I was sat in your kitchen as you cooked to I could smell the aroma then taste it! Lovely recipe Lissie. :)

  • Hi Lissie,

When do we add the chillies?
When I prepared, I had this question, I added two along with the dal in the cooker and the remaining two when adding tomatoes :).
    It came out well.
My family is now a huge fan of this, want me to prepare this atleast once a week.
    I prepared this yesterday too.
    This is simple and excellent.
    Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks,
    Priya

  • Hi Priya,

I add the chillies along with the dal in the cooker. Thank you for informing me, I actually forgot to mention it while posting!
There is nothing wrong in adding them along with tomatoes.
Glad to hear that your family is enjoying it...!
It is better to have it at least twice a week.

    Thanks,
    Lissie
