Dried Prawns Fry/ Unakka Chemmeen Varuthathu

Ingredients

Dried prawns – 1 cup

Small onions – 10 sliced

Curry leaves – 1 sprig

Chilly powder – 1/2 tsp

Salt – to taste

Coconut oil – 3 tsp

Method

Heat oil in a non-stick pan and add the dried prawns.  Fry on a low flame.  Stir continuously while frying so that the prawns don’t get burnt.  When half done, add small onions and curry leaves.  Add salt and fry till the prawns are crisp.  Switch off the flame and add chilly powder.  Mix well and allow it to cool for sometime.  Transfer to an airtight container.  Super tasty ‘Dried Prawns Fry/ Unakka Chemmeen Varuthathu’ is a very good side dish for rice or kanji/rice porridge.  Cheers!

If salt is already added to the dried prawns, please add very little salt while frying or avoid it.  I used the processed variety of dried prawns which is available in supermarkets.  If you are using the local variety, please remove the head and tail, and wash and squeeze dry the dried prawns before frying.  Also add more oil as required.

  2. Interesting. I’ve seen these packets of dried shrimp in the Asian groceries, some of them look like they already have chilli on them. This would make an easy side dish.
